Day
1: Wednesday, September 15, 2010 • Depart
Our journey begins as we depart on our scheduled international
flight over the Atlantic to Edinburgh, Scotland.
Day 2: Thursday, September 16,
2010 • Edinburgh
Upon
arrival in Edinburgh, we meet our Reformation Tour director
who will escort us to our motor coach. We begin with a tour
of Edinburgh which takes us to the historic sites of the Edinburgh
Castle, the Queen’s Holyrood Palace and points out the
Royal Mile. We also visit St. Giles Cathedral to which Knox
was appointed minister of the church. This evening we enjoy
a welcome dinner at our hotel. D
Day
3: Friday, September 17, 2010 • Edinburgh
Today's excursion takes us to the walled city of Stirling and
the William Wallace Monument. It was here that Wallace fought
for the freedom of Scotland. The pastor and leader of the Covenanters,
William Guthrie, was captured here and taken out of the Church
of the Holy Rude and martyred by the English King. We'll return
to Edinburgh for dinner and overnight. B/D
Day 4: Saturday, September 18,
2010 • York
This morning we visit the 15th century house where John Knox
leader of the Scottish Reformation and founder of the Presbyterian
Church lived for a short time before he died. Today it is a
museum that holds an exhibition about his life. With time to
reflect on the life of John Knox we board our coach and turn
south towards York. En route we'll have a brief stop at Hadrian’s
Wall then continue on to York, our home for the next two nights.
B/D
Day
5: Sunday, September 19, 2010 • York
Today we worship at the York Baptist church. Later we learn
more about York and the famous Minster with a local guide. The
first Minster was built on this site in around 623 AD. No one
knows when Christianity first arrived in the city but by 306
when Constantine the Great was pro-claimed Emperor in York,
it is probable there was a small Christian community among those
who proclaimed him. In 312 he issued a general edict of toleration
for the Christian Church. However, by the year 314 York already
had its own bishop, implying that the Christian community had
been meeting there for some time, probably since long before
their faith was officially tolerated. B/D
Day
6: Monday, September 20, 2010 • Bedford area
Continuing on our journey, our first stop is Lutterworth, where
John Wycliffe translated the English Bible, and trained his
"Lollard Preachers". We’ll meet some of the
church members as we tour Wycliffe’s St. Mary’s
Church. Over a cup o’ tea and a delicious English scone,
we’ll enjoy their fellowship and words of welcome, along
with a few testimonies. Hear the stories of God’s deliverance
in WWII and through the decades since. Then we continue on to
the Bedford area, visiting the sites connected with John Bunyan
in Elstow and Bedford including the Bunyan Museum, Moot Hall,
and the Meeting House. B/D
Day
7: Tuesday, September 21, 2010 • Oxford
Our
destination today is Oxford. En route we visit sites connected
with William Carey. We travel to Moulton where Carey taught
at the little village school and where he was ordained in 1787.
We also see the shoe shop where Carey labored. Later we continue
on to Olney where Carey was linked with other mission-minded
pastors. In Olney we visit the Newton Cowper Museum, the Baptist
Church. and St. Peter and Paul’s Church. We end our day
in Oxford. B/D
Day 8: Wednesday, September 22, 2010 • Oxford
A local guide leads us on a walking tour of Oxford, including
the Reformers Monument and the Cathedral. Founded by Cardinal
Wolsey as Cardinal's College in 1524, this twelfth century church
is one of the oldest buildings in Oxford and one of the smallest
Anglican cathedrals in Eng-land. It is also the only church
in the world to be both a cathedral and a college chapel. The
college buildings took over the site of St. Frideswide's Monastery,
which was sup-pressed by Wolsey to fund his college. The monastery
dated back to the earliest days of Oxford as a settlement in
the 9th Century AD. The cathedral has a famous men and boys'
choir, and is one of the main choral foundations in Oxford.
Famous alumni include: Charles and John Wesley, Lewis Carroll,
William Penn, Albert Einstein and John Locke. The afternoon
will be free to enjoy Oxford. Tonight we have the opportunity
to dine at Regent’s Park College Hall. B
Day 9: Thursday, September 23,
2010 • London
We depart Oxford for London, where a local guide takes us on
a tour of the city including Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, and
the Houses of Parliament, Marble Arch, Hyde Park, Trafalgar
Square, and much more. We end the tour with a visit to the magnificent
Westminster Abbey where royalty are christened, married and
buried, and where the King James Bible was translated. B/D
Day 10: Friday, September 24, 2010
• London
Our tour today begins at the John Wesley’s Chapel, Wesley's
Home and the Museum of Methodism, which provides an excellent
history of the denomination, from Wesley to the present day.
John Wesley (1703-1791) has been called the most influential
Protestant leader of the English speaking world since the Reformation.
He is the founder of the Methodist Church. We’ll see the
small room he used for his quiet times of prayer, his home,
his burial site and monument and have a time of prayer that
we too could live a life that is more fruitful and obedient
to Christ. Just across the street is the legendary Bunhill Fields
Cemetery, where you can see the burial place of Susanna Wesley,
Isaac Watts, John Bunyan, Daniel Defoe, and other eminent nonconformist
Protestants.
Our bus then drops us at St. Paul’s Cathedral, where we
have time to buy lunch in the crypt. St. Paul’s is a marvelous
building designed by Sir Christopher Wren and recently renovated
to its former splendor. John Wesley often worshipped here and
on the day of his conversion, he came here for an afternoon
service and was deeply moved by the choir’s anthem, "Out
of the Deep Have I Called Unto Thee, O Lord". After a guided
tour and time of reflection we walk to the famous River Thames.
On the way, we pause at a WWII Memorial about the bombing firestorms.
While here we can pray to better understand the legacy of political
divide between Germany and England. We cross the Thames on the
new Millennium Bridge, admiring the views of the city and step
back in time as we enter the reconstructed Globe Theater, complete
with thatched-roof, live Shakespeare plays, and one of the best
cafes in town! Our final stop is the incredible Southwark Cathedral,
where Christians have been worshipping since 1207. We see the
tomb of Bishop Lancelot Andrewes, one of the translators of
the Authorized Version of the Bible. John Harvard, founder of
the great American university, was born in Southwark and baptized
here in 1607. The cathedral's Harvard Chapel has been lavishly
decorated as a result of gifts from members of that university.
The evening will be free to see a London show. B
Day 11: Saturday, September 25,
2010 • London
This morning we visit the Metropolitan Tabernacle. Here Charles
Spurgeon (1834-1892) held his great revival meetings. Spurgeon
was a Baptist preacher who set his country on fire for God with
his powerful sermons. He preached to 6,000 people a day and
at least three times as many on a Sunday. During his lifetime
he preached to an estimated ten million people. It’s still
a thriving congregation in the center of London. The afternoon
is free in London for individual pursuits. Tonight we enjoy
a farewell dinner together. B/D
Day 12: Sunday, September 26, 2010
• Return
We fly out of London today with many fond memories of our time
in the British Isles. B
