What
better way to enjoy the German countryside than a relaxing, mellow
trip along the charming Rhine river? The many castles line the impressive
waterways, with medieval towns such as Rudesheim and St. Goarshausen
as great places to disembark and stroll.
At Reformation
Tours, we believe in balancing touring sites, with times of
relaxation, which is why many of our tours begin with a Rhine cruise.
After the long stuffy plane ride, it's a relief to feel the gentle
river breeze as you drift past castles
and vineyards. |

| Rudesheim
This beautiful town nestling on the banks of the Rhine, dates back
to before the Roman era. Sites include Siegfried's Mechanical Music
Museum, the Drosselgasse,
a lively street with live evening music, a Medieval Torture Museum
(not for the faint of heart!), the Rheingau Wine Museum. You can
also take a cable car up to the Niederwald Monument for a fabulous
view. For more tourist information - click

Loreley
Rock. This impressive rock 450 feet high is at the
narrowest and deepest point of the Rhine. Due to a reef upstream,
many sailors never made it past this bend in the river. Legend goes
that a count's son drowned after being distracted by a blonde nymph's
song. When the count sent men to capture her, she called on "Father
Rhine" to help and he sent waves to carry her off to safety. The
legend adds fun mystery to this part of the river and sells postcards!!

St
Goar. This town was named after a 6th century monk.
The impressive Burg Katz castle, built in 1371 is just across the
river from St Goar. It's now privately owned and can't be visited.
Rheinfels Castle, the mightiest and largest of the Rhine Castles,
stands above the town. Rick Steves' book on Germany, Austia and
Switzerland has some fascinating information about this castle.
The best way to get there, is by the fun miniature railway. The
town also the world's largest free-hanging cuckoo clock, the Doll
and Bear museum and one of only 2 shops in Germany that sells Steiff
bears. For more tourist information on St Goar - click

History Highlights:
| Thirty
Years' War.
During the
Thirty Years' War (1618 - 1648) the
rulers of each castle and kingdom decided whether he and
his people would remain Catholic or become Protestant.
There was tremendous loss of life, which Luther was totally
opposed to. |
